Shiroshi and his assistant, Seiji, venture to Okuhida to investigate the baffling old case of a man supposedly killed by a phantom attacker. At an inn belonging to the victims daughter, located in a sea of fiery red maples, the pair encounter a serpent writhing in the darkness and another death that might be connected to the murder all those years ago. Is this the work of a snakes curse, or is it something far more tragic?
