On the eastern front the Horse-drawn limber remained the main form of gun motive power throughout the entire war. Limber teams numbering from two to six horses were used to pull a variety of guns in the Soviet; German and Axis allied forces. Usually six horse teams were used for field guns and howitzers from 75mm up to 105mm calibre; while smaller teams of two or four horses could be used for lighter weapons such as anti-tank guns and heavy mortars. Some heavier guns had up to twelve horses in limber teams. The limber itself was used to carry ammunition; addition tools and equipment as well as transporting the crew; who were often found riding the horses while in limber. Smaller horse teams often pulled the limber and gun only while the crew kept pace by walking.
The Model
The model is based on a Russian example with a very similar hitch system to that of the Cossack Tachanka; but the Germans pressed large numbers of captured Soviet equipment into service.The hitch can be modified by replacing the four hitching poles with a single central pole to suit a more typical German arrangement. The pack comes with 3 limbers and 6 horses; so you can either make three 2-horse limbers; one 6-horse limber or a 2-horse and a 4-horse limber.
